Three-layer styling with scarf, belt and jewellery

Three-layer styling with scarf, belt and jewellery

19 degrees in the morning, 24 at noon. This weather is the hardest to dress for. A knit under a light coat, and the neck feels cold if left bare. The scarf does not need to be wrapped fully here: fold it to three fingers wide, loop once and tie a single knot, knot placed just left of the collarbone. Coat collar open, the scarf edge just showing.

Belt depends on coat length. If the coat covers the hips, belt at the narrowest part of the waist, buckle one notch left of centre. Short coat sits at the waist, so the belt sits two or three centimetres below the coat hem, not overlapping. On colour, a charcoal coat with a navy belt is too close; choose brown or burgundy so the waistline shows.

Wear only one piece of jewellery. The scarf already has a pattern, so earrings should be thin hoops or small studs, not competing with the scarf. Wear the bracelet on the hand that carries the bag, so it does not knock the handle when walking.

The Gucci wool scarf in the shop is charcoal, 190x37cm. This size works as a neck scarf, and folded into a narrow strip it works as a shawl. The Burberry navy wool scarf is 210x45cm, long enough to loop once with hem left over; with a long coat, drape one side behind the shoulder. Both are in the shop; come feel the thickness before deciding.

Takeaway

  • Fold the scarf to three fingers wide, single knot just left of the collarbone
  • Leave two or three centimetres between belt and coat hem
  • Wear only one piece of jewellery; bracelet on the hand that carries the bag
